Oh hello, I didn’t see you there. My name is Kevin Ryan, and I’m a Senior studying Cinema and Photography. When I first got to SIU I knew very little about alt.news, and I thought, “News? I don’t want do be apart of the news.” I joined alt.news and quickly found that everything alt.news does, is far from what is typically associated with the “word news”. We do everything from music videos to movies to documentaries. After I got past that “news” stigma, I was hesitant to start proposing ideas for no good reason at all. although I had my reservations, I pitched my first idea and everyone was really receptive and helped me to create my idea. alt.news is such a great place for people who don’t want to wait through a curriculum to get started producing content. I’m so grateful for alt.news because it is solely responsible for development of my skills in editing, producing, motion graphics, lighting, etc. I have grown to love all of the people I work with in alt.news and have such a respect for them. This entire experience has been the biggest lesson in teamwork and collaboration, and if I’ve learned one thing, it’s that you can’t do it alone.
